Our string instrument shop is really a combination of two different business models. One is a supply business for strings and other accessories. This part of our business provides products that are not unique to us. They are also carried by other reputable places of business, as well. Therefore, here is our value proposition of strings and accessories: our commitment besides highly competitive pricing is to fill your order and send it on its way to you within 24 hours, as long as the order is placed by 2 p.m. EST. In the very rare event we cannot, for whatever reason, we will inform you and provide you with options.
The other aspect of our business is high-quality violins that are of excellent value. In order to best serve our customers we must be a transparent business. This makes a huge difference! Earning your business and becoming your provider of choice requires building trust. We build trust by being transparent-that is, we tell it like it is; we do not spin stories-we tell what we know. We also promote what we do by doing extremely well. We are not into bashing our competition or alternative sources.
The world of bowed instruments can be exciting because it is rich with history but it can also be a bit confusing. When making an instrument purchase, there are many things that are important to be aware of, including many myths, tales, and attitudes that cloud decisions and often result in spending money unnecessarily. We help you sift through all that. At La Casa Guarneri, we are well informed about our industry and we enjoy sharing that information with our customers. In addition, our experiences with teachers and students, academies and schools, musicians, composers, violin luthiers, manufacturers, and suppliers provide us constant feedback that is extremely helpful for us to better serve you.
First and foremost, we gain your trust and business by working with you. Each violin in our inventory has its own story, and we share it. We have our own lines of violins, such as Francesco Murano, Guglielmo Arcangeli, and William Thomas, as well as our own line of bows, such as Thomas Vollmer and Casa Guarneri. We will provide information as to where the particular instrument comes from, when and how it was constructed, and any other history that may be of interest.
Our Quality Assurance
Our violins are sourced from a variety of places. But that is only the beginning. Each violin is graded independently by considering two major factors: tone production and playability. We then do complete quality evaluations before offering the violins for sale:
- The violins are set up individually by having high-quality bridges cut to fit the particular violin.
- The neck is inspected to ensure that it is set properly and the fingerboard is evaluated and planed, if required, to optimize playability.
- The nut is often replaced, ensuring ideal string spacing and height.
- The sound post is inspected to make certain it fits the violin perfectly and that it is placed in the proper position to maximize both tone and resonance; if it does not, a new one is fitted and positioned.
- Each violin is strung using high-quality strings. We use Thomastik Dominants® and a Goldbrokat E string on all our violins. (Of course, we would string it with your choice of brand when purchased.)
- Then, the violin is played in. That means we actually play it repeatedly over a period of time to open it up. If any adjustments are required, we make them.
- Finally, the violin is again evaluated.
- It is priced accordingly and offered for sale.
The tone quality of our violins becomes the determining factor when it is priced. Since we source quality violins, excellent construction is an uncompromised standard. We invest a great deal in our violins, and that is why we tend to keep smaller stock.
